Understanding POP + How Chinese Medicine Can Help

Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) is more common than many realize—and often underdiagnosed or misunderstood. In honor of Pelvic Organ Prolapse Awareness Month, we’re sharing a free educational video presentation to shine a light on this important topic and explore how acupuncture and Chinese medicine can offer meaningful support.

  • The stages of prolapse and how they progress

  • The role of acupuncture and Chinese medicine in managing symptoms and restoring balance

What is Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP)?

Pelvic Organ Prolapse occurs when one or more pelvic organs shift out of their normal anatomical position and descend into the vaginal canal, often creating a noticeable bulge. This condition reflects a loss of internal support and is typically the result of pelvic floor weakening or injury.

Common Causes of POP:

  • Pregnancy, labor, and delivery

  • Excessive straining (chronic constipation or heavy lifting)

  • Persistent coughing

  • Menopause, due to hormonal changes and loss of tissue elasticity

  • Pelvic floor trauma or surgery

Supporting POP Through Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine offer a holistic approach to POP, addressing both the root causes and symptomatic relief. Key treatment principles include:

  • Strengthening Spleen Qi to support internal organ positioning

  • Tonifying Kidney Qi for structural support and tissue integrity

  • Promoting circulation and lymphatic flow to reduce discomfort or pressure

  • Supporting emotional balance, often impacted by pelvic conditions

We may use a combination of acupuncture, herbal medicine, abdominal massage, dietary guidance, and lifestyle shifts tailored to each individual's constitution and stage of prolapse.
